Athletic Handbook

BIBLICAL PERSPECTIVE          But thanks be to God!  He gives us the VICTORY through our Lord Jesus Christ.1 Corinthians 15:57

MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of St. Peter’s Lutheran School and Little Saints Preschool and Daycare is to provide each student with a Christ-centered education offering a worldview that is founded in the Bible.  It is our purpose that each student becomes equipped spiritually, academically, physically, and socially in a manner that would bring honor and glory to God.

Philosophy       The athletic program of St. Peter’s Lutheran School serves as an extracurricular activity of the school.  Its objectives and goals are aligned with those listed on the first page of the Parent and Student Handbook.  We believe that participation in athletics is a positive contributor to the growth and development of a child’s physical, mental, and spiritual health.  Our purpose and aim includes 1) Christian fellowship and sportsmanship; 2) opportunities for Christian witness; 3) an outlet for physical exercise; 4) an opportunity to participate in athletic competition; and 5) the upbuilding of an individual’s self-confidence.

Objectives
1.    That each student athlete would recognize the victory of eternal life in Jesus Christ, as the number one goal in life.
2.    That each student athlete honor God and praise Him for the blessings of physical health and the ability to participate in a sport activity
3.    That each student athlete grow in Christian fellowship, teamwork, and sportsmanship in a setting that includes athletic training and competition
4.    That each student athlete experience an increase in self-confidence
5.    That each student athlete develop a greater appreciation for physical fitness
6.    That each student athlete grow in their skill specifically in the sports offered in our school: volleyball, basketball, baseball, and softball

What is Offered

·         Volleyball            Girls                Grades 3-8
·         Basketball           Coed               Grades 3-8
·         Baseball              Boys               Grades 5-8     co-op with Altamont Lutheran
·         Softball JV           Girls                Grades 4-7     co-op with Altamont Lutheran

Participation and Eligibility    A sports physical is required by all student athletes before participation can take place. A school physical qualifies for a sports physical.

Students participating in athletics must maintain satisfactory grades to remain eligible.  If a student’s average in any subject falls below a C- , the student will be placed on a probation list for one week, Thursday to Thursday. The student would be eligible to participate in athletics for that one week. However, if the student’s grade point average shows a grade below a C- for a second consecutive week, the student will be deemed ineligible for all athletic activities for a minimum of one week. The student can regain eligibility status at the end of the week (Friday) if the grade has improved to a C- or higher.

Students penalized with a detention or suspension at school will receive a reduction in playing time in the next scheduled athletic competition following the incident.

Players at the varsity level will compete individually for starting positions and quantity of playing time.  Playing time on the court is determined by the coach using skill, effort, attitude, and attendance at practice as a basis.  The junior varsity teams will emphasize fundamentals, participation, and become more familiar to the rules and concepts of the game.  The varsity teams will emphasize a greater emphasis to be competitive and strategic in game situations.  Not all players on a varsity team will be guaranteed playing time at each game. Junior varsity players and C team players will be offered greater playing opportunities provided the player has been regular in attending practice sessions and is in good standing with behavior (no detentions) and grades (no D's). . No player can earn playing time in a game without attending practice.

Team Rules

Student athletes are always expected to follow the rules set forth by the coach.  A failure to honor the rules would lead to the following sequence of actions:

                1.             A conference with the coach and the player
                2.             Coach and/or athletic director in touch with parents
                3.             Reduced playing time or one game suspension as determined by coach
                4.             Two game suspension
                5.             Increased game suspensions as judged necessary

It is expected that a student athlete notify the coach(es) if he or she is unable to attend a practice or game.   Missed absences (especially unexcused) will  typically reduce the amount of playing time in a regular game.  Direct communication with the coach is very important.  Students must be present at school for a minimum of three hours on “game days” (second half of the day) to participate in a game that same evening except if a player has a non ill-related appointment such as an eye doctor or dentist visit.

Traveling to Away Games Parents are responsible for the transportation of their child(ren) to all away games. If your child is being transported by another parent or coach, please offer some token of your appreciation to the driver.

Finances:    The athletic department uses the children’s fund to cover its expenses. At the same time, all athletic proceeds feed into the children’s fund.

Fees:    The fee to participate in each sport is $5.00. To keep this fee low, we expect parents to willingly serve with concessions, take admission money, keep the scorebook, run the scoreboard, or assist coaching.
